Heat Transfer Lab

Heat Transfer Laboratory provides an integrated experimental and computational environment for teaching, research, and development in thermal sciences. The laboratory is organized around a dedicated heat-transfer apparatus room and associated workstations, with a range of facilities for investigating the fundamental modes of heat transfer and transient thermal behaviour. The laboratory also supports advanced research in thermal management and human thermal sciences. A dedicated experimental rig for high-power-density axial-flux permanent-magnet motors enables investigation of heat transfer across the narrow rotating air gap between stationary and rotating discs. The setup incorporates controlled heating, variable rotational speed, thermocouple-based temperature measurements, and data acquisition, allowing the effects of rotational speed, air-gap width, and heat input on temperature distribution and heat-transfer characteristics to be studied. In parallel, experimental systems for human thermoregulation include temperature measurement and wireless physiological monitoring systems, supporting studies of thermal comfort, environmental heat stress, and human responses under different climatic and activity conditions. The laboratory also has advanced experimental capabilities for flow and heat-transfer diagnostics, including micro-Particle Image Velocimetry (micro-PIV), enabling measurement and visualization of flow fields at small length scales. This complements the laboratory's conventional thermal measurements and supports investigations of coupled fluid-flow and heat-transfer phenomena. The facility also incorporates 3D-printing capability, enabling rapid fabrication of customized experimental models, flow channels, test sections, prototypes, and components for research and laboratory development. Overall, the laboratory provides an integrated platform combining classical heat-transfer experiments, advanced flow diagnostics, rapid prototyping, computational modelling, and application-oriented thermal research for aerospace, biomedical, energy, transportation, and human-spaceflight applications.
