IIST team leads a scientific discovery: First glimpse of magnetism near an infant massive star.

An international team led by astronomers from the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, India, have made a remarkable discovery. Radio emission with a special property known as circular polarization (shown in the schematic image as twisted light beam) has been detected near a massive, young forming star. The new data allowed researchers to infer the magnetic field near the protostar to be about 20–35 Gauss, roughly 100 times stronger than Earth’s magnetic field. The detection supports a long-standing theory: that powerful jets from stars and black holes are driven by the same magnetic engine. Mr. Amal George Cheriyan is a PhD student under Prof. Sarita Vig at the Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), Thiruvananthapuram, India. They carried out this work in collaboration with Prof. Nirupam Roy from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, India, Prof. Samir Mandal, IIST, and other scientists from the Institute of Radio Astronomy and Astrophysics (IRyA) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), Mexico, and Instituto de Astronomıa Teorica y Experimental (IATE) of the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (UNC) Córdoba, Argentina.

IIST is spearheading the experiment ‘CROP SEEDS on ISS’ wherein a host of food crop seeds, integrated as a biology payload in the Space Biology Laboratory are on board Axiom-4 mission. For this project, IIST has entered into an MoU with the Human Spaceflight Centre (HSFC), ISRO which was signed by Dr. Dipankar Banerjee, Vice Chancellor, IIST and Dr. D K Singh, Director HSFC at ISRO HQ on 21st May 2025. The science investigation team is led by Dr. K G Sreejalekshmi, Professor at IIST and PI of the project. IIST has identified College of Agriculture, Vellayani, Kerala Agricultural University to collaborate on this project and to support with the seed samples and post-flight field studies. The payload comprises seeds of self-pollinating crops – cereals, pulse, vegetables and oil seeds, released by Kerala Agricultural University. The hardware integration at Space Biology lab was supported by ESA experts and the payload was shipped by IIST to the Kennedy Space Centre (KSC), NASA for the launch. The PI of the project Dr. K G Sreejalekshmi travelled to KSC, NASA for the final inspection and hardware turnover to the Axiom team. The ground control samples are maintained at the Space Biology Lab. Once the seeds return from space, they will be grown out in the fields for multiple generations to assess the unique effects of microgravity on various growth and yield parameters of these crop seeds. The experiment can bring vital clues on exploring microgravity as an environmental stress or that can bring useful traits in plants that can advance agriculture on Earth and in Space.

New Collaborative Initiative Between IIST and SCTIMST on Human Thermoregulation Model Development for ISRO 6th November 2024

The Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) and Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences and Technology (SCTIMST) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to collaboratively conduct research focused on thermal comfort challenges faced by personnel in high-demand, critical environments. The MoU was signed on November 6, 2024, by Dr. Sanjay Behari, Director of SCTIMST, and Prof. Dipankar Banerjee, Director of IIST.
The partnership, outlined under the projects “Development of Mathematical Human Thermal Behavior Model for a Reference Indian Subject” and “Evaluation of Thermal Comfort of Operating Theatre Personnel using Surgical Gown and Personal Protective Equipment,” aims to break new ground in understanding and enhancing the thermal regulation and comfort of individuals exposed to challenging conditions. The principal investigators for this research will be Dr. Shine SR, Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at IIST, and Dr. Jayanand B. Sudhir, Additional Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at SCTIMST.
The collaborative study at SCTIMST will focus on factors influencing the thermal comfort of surgeons in tropical hospital operating rooms, specifically examining the effects of standard surgical aprons and gowns. Utilizing data from a series of controlled experiments, SCTIMST researchers will assess the thermal impact of traditional surgical garments and explore ways to incorporate thermoregulatory features for improved comfort. This data will then contribute to validating a sophisticated thermoregulation model developed by IIST, designed to accurately predict temperature distribution across living tissue layers and measure human thermal responses to different environmental conditions.
The IIST project team is creating an analytical model tailored to the unique physiological characteristics of a reference Indian subject. This model, based on an in-depth review of thermoregulatory principles, is designed to assist ISRO in examining the effects of microgravity on thermoregulation, assessing the performance of various spacesuit designs tailored for Indian subjects, and evaluating spacesuits under the extreme conditions anticipated in upcoming missions.
This collaboration between IIST and SCTIMST marks a significant step forward in tailoring thermal comfort and protective measures to local needs and contexts. With implications for medical, industrial, and space applications, the project underscores the growing importance of individualized approaches in high-tech solutions for extreme environments. This initiative reflects a mutual commitment to research excellence and advancing scientific understanding that supports both healthcare professionals and future explorers.
