Atmospheric Aerosols in Extreme Environments: A Journey from the Himalayas to the Poles and Oceans

Atmospheric Aerosols in Extreme Environments: A Journey from the Himalayas to the Poles and Oceans

Tue, 23 Dec 2025

The talk examines how atmospheric aerosols impact climate in extreme regions like the Himalayas, poles, and oceans. It focuses on their effects on radiation, snow albedo, and regional climate processes.

About the Speaker

Dr. Arun B. S. is a Research Scientist in the Atmospheric Microphysics Department at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS), Leipzig, Germany (since May 2022). He earned his Ph.D. in Physics in 2022 from the Space Physics Laboratory (SPL), Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Thiruvananthapuram, with a thesis titled “Investigation of Atmospheric Aerosols over the Himalayas: Direct and Snow Albedo Forcing.” His earlier academic records include an M.Phil. in Physics (University of Kerala), M.Sc. in Physics (Mar Ivanios College, University of Kerala), and B.Sc. in Physics and Computer Applications (Government College Kariavattom, University of Kerala). Dr. Arun’s research mostly devoted to understanding atmospheric aerosol microphysics, aerosol chemistry, aerosol-cloud-radiation interactions, and air-sea exchange processes, with a primary focus on polar regions (Arctic & Antarctic), the high-altitude Himalayas, and oceanic regions such as the Indian Ocean & Southern Ocean supported by dedicated field and laboratory experiments using aircraft, shipborne and ground based platforms.
