Activities
From October 2025 to December 2025, the Maths Club successfully conducted its Weekly Mathematics Challenge initiative, aimed at cultivating problem-solving skills and sustained engagement with mathematics among students.
Each week, a carefully curated mathematical problem was released, covering diverse areas of mathematics, including:
- Number Theory
- Calculus
- Combinatorics
- Linear Algebra
Students submitted their solutions through an online submission portal, and selected solutions were recognized through the official Maths Club communication channels.
To maintain transparency and create a permanent repository of mathematical discussions, all challenges and their official solutions were archived in the club's GitHub repository:
Repository:https://github.com/mathsclub-iist/maths-club-weekly-challenges
Repository Contents
- Weekly challenge statements in PDF format.
- Official solutions to the challenges.
- LaTeX templates for preparing future challenges.
- Educational resources for students interested in mathematical problem solving.
The Maths Club coordinated and hosted the Simon Marais Mathematics Competition (SMMC) 2025, an internationally recognized mathematics competition that promotes creative and analytical problem-solving skills among undergraduate students.
The event provided students with an opportunity to test their mathematical abilities on challenging problems that extend beyond standard coursework and encouraged participation in the global mathematical community.
The Maths Club organized an invited lecture by Dr. Ganesh Kiran Vaidya on the topic “Nonlocal Conservation Laws: Theory and Numerics.” The lecture introduced participants to modern developments in the theory of nonlocal conservation laws and their applications, particularly in the mathematical modelling of traffic dynamics.
Key Topics Covered
- Scalar and systems of nonlocal conservation laws.
- Applications in modelling traffic flow and dynamics.
- Derivation of a novel Kuznetsov-type lemma and the uniqueness of entropy solutions.
- Convergence analysis of finite-volume approximations to entropy solutions.
- Numerical experiments demonstrating convergence rates.
Speaker: Dr. Ganesh Kiran Vaidya, INSPIRE Faculty Fellow, Indian Statistical Institute (ISI), Bangalore
Time: 4:00 PM
Venue: C-109, ID Block
