Indian Institute of Space Science And Technology (IIST),Valiamala,Trivandrum is a deemed to be University ,Started by Department of Space, Government of India in 2007.IIST’s undergraduate and graduate courses are modeled in such a way that the passing out students qualify to join Indian Space Research organization(ISRO’s)programs in the field of Space Science and Technology .IIST offers 3 programmes in Aerospace Engineering, Avionics and Dual Degree programme with in Engineering Physics,13 /MS programmes and Ph.D in all areas of Science and Technology and Humanities. Also over the years since its inception, IIST’s various Department regularly organize symposiums workshops and summer schools in the areas of Space Science and Technology to scientists from ISRO centres, faculties and students from academic institutes and industries.


A Short term course(6 days) on Modern Optical Engineering with several theoretical 3 lectures on Optical Metrology, Lens Design, Wavefront Sensors and hands on experiment related to above topics and designing of optical systems. This course is scheduled to be organized during 27th June to 2nd July 2016 and it is ideal for Scientists/Engineers working in ISRO, DRDO, Engineers working in optical industries and researchers from academia to get first hand theoretical knowledge and experience in hands on experiments. Course contents, hand out of experiments and optical design will be provided in the beginning of workshop. Experts to conduct this short-term course are drawn from academic institutes and R&D organizations.

  • Experiments on Interferometry Michelson-G, M-Z, Shearing Interferometers etc.
  • Wavefront Measurement by Shack-Hartmann sensors.
  • Tip Tilt Mirrors/Deformable Mirror in Wavefront Correction
  • Measurement of effective focal length, surface curvature, flatness etc.
  • Measurement of absorption, refractive index and dispersion characteristics of optical materials
  • Measurement of Laser beam characteristics
Hand –On Optical design

Analysis & Synthesis of practical optical systems with increasing complexity in lens structures, e.g.

  • Singlet
  • Broken Contract Doublet
  • Cemented Doublet
  • Cooke Triplet
  • Double Gauss Lens
  • A reflecting telescope objective
Course Fees:Rs. 6000.00
