About the Institute

Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST) is Asia’s first Space Institute and the first in the world to offer complete range of undergraduate, post graduate and doctoral programmes with specific focus to space science and technology. The institute provides a vibrant research atmosphere and offers B. Tech, M. Tech, Doctoral and postdoctoral programmes in the areas Avionics, Aerospace and Physical Science. The Institute has the unique mandate of encouraging and equipping brilliant youngsters from all parts of the country to take up a career as Scientist/Engineer in Indian Space Research Organization. IIST functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Space, Government of India.

Organising Department

The Avionics Department offers a four year B. Tech. Programme in Avionics which gives technical excellence in all areas of Avionics engineering such as Digital System Design, Digital communication, VLSI Design, Navigation, Guidance and Control, Computer Technology and Power Electronics. In addition, the department offers M.Tech in RF and Microwave Communication, Digital Signal Processing, Control Systems and VLSI & Microsystems. The department also offers Ph.D program in various disciplines of Avionics like Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science

Course Objectives

Deep learning methods are now prevalent in the area of machine learning, and are now used invariably in many research areas. In recent years it received significant media attention as well. The influx of research articles in this area demonstrates that these methods are remarkably successful at a diverse range of tasks. Namely self driving cars, new kinds of video games, AI, Automation, object detection and recognition, surveillance tracking etc.

The proposed workshop aims at introducing the foundations of Deep learning to various professionals who are working in the area of automation, machine learning, artificial intelligence, mathematics, statistics, and neurosciences (both theory and applications).

This is proposed to introduce Neural networks and Deep learning approaches (mainly Convolutional Neural networks) and give few typical applications, where and how they are applied. Few basic deep learning programming skills will be imparted to the participants using well known deep learning software.

Broad Topics that will be covered in the Workshop are
  • Basics of Neural Networks and Convolution Neural Network applications
  • Image recognition evolution from pre to post Deeplearning
  • Discussion Alexnet and VGG architectures for recognition
  • Other areas likes: GANs, Style transfer and segmentation
  • Hands-on: a code walk through of few of the above applications.
